Where do I find rolls of coins to search?
Probably the most difficult task in the coin roll hunting process is actually finding the coins (and enough of them) to begin your hunting adventures. The sources and steps below will hopefully put you on your way to a successful hunt.
The best source for coins to search in our experience is your local bank. Usually you can walk right in and ask them if you can buy any rolls of coins - or full boxes if you're a big time coin roller 😉 With that being said, it bears a little explanation. Banks usually carry enough coinage on hand to service the local businesses that need change and coins. If their vaults are full of coin boxes, they are usually happy to sell you a box or two. If however it's been a while since their last delivery, they may be running low and they will want to hang on to the coin they have to service the businesses that need it, rather than let you take it. So it is always best to call ahead to see if they have enough coin to spare. If your local bank is low on coins, or they give off the vibe that they don't really want to give their coinage to you, you have a couple options: 1) Try another bank, or 2) Politely ask if it's possible for them to order coins in specifically for you.
If you are going to ask your bank to order in coins, BE POLITE and HUMBLE! They don't have to do it (and some banks won't at all)...however if you are nice to them and ask politely most bankers are happy to oblige. It helps tremendously to develop a friendship with the tellers and bankers (especially the bank managers). We know all our tellers by name, and we are very friendly when we go in. Occasionally we even bring little gifts and frequently tell them THANK YOU for helping us get the coin we need to search. A banker as a friend can be your best ally when you're coin roll hunting.
If you strike out at your usual bank, just try another one. We will frequently get coin from several banks in the area. Just keep trying! Don't forget banks inside grocery stores too! They often get coin from the stores registers and can be a great source.
If you're only looking for a few rolls at a time, you can ask cashiers at virtually any retail store if they can give you your change in rolls of coin. This can be hit or miss, but most cashiers aren't on the lookout for special coins so you can often find gems in your change.

One of the absolute BEST sources for coins to hunt with a really high success rate is friends and relatives - especially OLD ONES! 🙂 Most grandparents we know have jars of change that they have been collecting for years, and they will often have old and valuable coins right in front of them! Kindly ask them if you can look through their hordes of change and trade them for anything special you may find. If they've been saving change for a while you may very well walk away with some amazing coins!
